I traveled with my collaborator, Rebecca wear, for a research trip funded by the University of California's Critical Refugees Studies Collective, which promotes research and conversation about refugees around the world. I am writing a play based on Okinawan displacement during World War II as well as the impending displacement of climate refugees in island nations.
During the Battle of Okinawa, many Ryukyuans (the indigenous people of Okinawa) were forced to live in caves. Many people died and there were some who lived there for months not knowing the war had ended. The original intent was to go to Okinawa, but because of travel restrictions we conducted research in Hawaii. This play is being developed with Circle X Theatre Co. in their Evolving Playwrights Group.
